Tracking Device Leads To Electronics Bust In Washington

Olympia, Washington is one of the most friendly, artistic, and environmentally impressive cities in all of Washington. Football is the sport that brings energy, the many hiking trails bring adventure and an eco-friendly lifestyle is what creates balance for those who call the state of Washington home. Therefore, it is certainly news when an electronics recycling company based in the Olympia and Seattle region allegedly engaged in the exportation of hazardous materials overseas, but that is what happened according to local police investigators.

According to investigators, one of the biggest recycling businesses in the entire state is now facing various charges after the company was exposed for exporting T.V.s with components deemed as hazardous to facilities overseas that were completely unregulated. The facilities were based in Hong Kong and now the company in question, Total Reclaim, is under scrutiny after a GPS tracking system recorded the illegal activity in real-time.

Thus far the facts are still being revealed but what is known about the investigation is a tracker was equipped on some televisions that were given to the electronics recycling business and the tracking data showed the televisions traveling from the United State to Hong Kong. The GPS trackers were placed on the televisions by a non-profit agency that exposes environmental polluters. After data from the tracker exposed what was occurring with the electronics recycling, Total Reclaim was forced to admit that they were not being transparent and were indeed withholding information related to exports from investigators.

In a prepared statement released by the owners of Total Reclaim, the company stated that the investigation will reveal a poor market for commodities such as copper and shipping errors. This editor does not really know what to make of that because from the evidence brought forward from the GPS it is clear they were engaging in illegal practices, and the statement almost sounds like they are doing nothing more but trying to dodge responsibility for their activities. However, this case is very over as the Washington Department of Ecology as well as the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality are both now looking into whether to not Total Reclaim violated hazardous waste laws with their activity.
