The GPS systems are placed upon the animal where the tracking data can be obtained remotely in real-time, or downloaded by the research team if they are using passive recording technology. The information and location-based data from the GPS tracker is then plotted over a chart, map or other mapping software program, such as Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth, where it can be reviewed by biologists, scientists or other researchers.
